Let the locals have their day! The following week proved to be cold and damp but clearly there were contestable waves. And that my friends is all you really need to run a contest. The sponsors had quite a bag of goodies to give away for all the contestants and the atmosphere was positive fiesta of sorts. Now normally I would write a blow by blow description of the heats. However due to a prior committment, I missed the first few heats of the morning. I did see the remaining heats of the day. And what I saw was more of the same from the summer. The Menehunes were rocking the house while the other heats did basically the same. The players were same for the most part and make no mistake about it. These kids have themselves a blast and usallay they make the most of it. So just how big was the surf? Well, depending on who you ask it was at least 3' on the sets and maybe bigger during certain tides. The kids and contestants were treated to all kind of goodies from the sponsors. SURFFREEORDIE, NATIVE EYEWEAR, and WING CHUN HAWAII all stepped up and made this contest a memorable one. In clsoing we want to say that, It was a great Summer/Fall for our first run at our new District. I think we sent a message across the boards that NNE-ESA is here to stay and you Southern Boys and Girls better hold onto your seats come the next Regionals. Cause we're coming and we can SURF! |
The waves? Well, it all depends on who you ask. But suffice to say, it was clearly contestable conditions. In my view, it was 3-4' with onshore winds (light). The heats went off like clockwork. Ya see we do learn from our past. All tides had surf and therefore all heats went out. Depending on where you stood, it was either a high tide bounce into the shorebreak or a midtide reform into the sandbar. As per tradition the little guys went out first. There seems to be more and more Menehunes entering at each contest. This was no different. We had a very healthy contingent of the boys menehunes. Each one of them a potential contender. The quarter finals and semi finals had the better waves and the littlle guys made the best of the conditions. I can't say enough about these little guys. It is such a pleasure to watch them all. They are all so stoked to be out there. It's great. If you ever forget why you started surfing in the first place then take a seat during one of the Menehune heats. It will all come back to you. The Menehune Finals saw new comer Alex Cavalieri edge out Max Fatello for first place. Another case of Wave count. Alex paced himself while Max gobbled up everything that came his way. Jesse Gould took 3rd and in my opinion the best wave of the heat with a big backside cover-up. Jesse looks strong and all you Menehunes better look over your shoulder. Kody Grondin took 4th and is starting to connect the dots and it's only a matter of time before he gives these competitors a run for their money. Mitch Reppucci didn't get the waves he needed and took 5th. But anyone who knows Mitch knows that he's capable of taking any heat at any time. Owen Pearson finished up at 6th. It was a tight heat overall. The Boys heat saw much of the same mini upsets. With Colby Pearson taking first over Cy Zetterberg and Lars Jacobsen. Matt Evans came in at a very strong 4th with Cy's brother Victor settling in at 5th. Mike Zappala finished up at 6th and the Boys Final was history. Cy Zetterberg was long over due for a strong placing and he felt good about taking 2nd. Lars also realizes now that there's some competition out there and he needs to sharpen his skills. Another Legend was born on this day. |
