3rd Contest Results

York Beach Maine August 9, 2003
The 2nd Annual Liquid Dreams NNE-ESA Contest
was moved from last year's Wells Beach site to
Long Sands Beach in York ME.
After last week's original date being postponed due to
lack of surf, the Wave Gods came through with just
enough to give Lenny and Mark the greenlight.

The 3rd contest of the season was held in waist to chest
high southeast swell. Conditions varied from clear
to foggy to overcast and sunny, with variable winds.
The water temp was perfect. You could trunk it or
wear very little rubber. One thing was apparent,
The surfing remained hot throughout the day.
Many new and old ESA members came to compete.
There were lots of great surfing occuring at most times
of the day. Each heat became more difficult to judge as
the head to head competition took to the warm water.
Thanks to the double heat plan, we all got to go home
with the light of the day to guide us all home.
After a semi-long day the results came in.
Thanks to Mark and the gang at Liquid Dreams and
to all who came to support the NNE!

The WALL
North Beach, Hampton, NH
Sponsored by

NATIVE EYEWEAR
and
Wing Chun Hawaii

The 5th contest of the year finally went off after being cancelled the week before due to the extra large surf and the extra large egos of some of the local surfers. Director Lenny Nichols has said many times in the past that we are family and he lives by that law. Family also means being part of and being respectful to the locals. The local boys have waited for quite some time for a large swell to hit and quite honestly the waves on Columbus Day Weekend were long overdue. That and the fact that the RED BULL Contest appeared to be on the ESA contest was rightfully cancelled. As it turned out, the Red Bull never happened but the swell was there for anyone and everyone. Could we have had the contest at the Rocks? Yes and no. The surf was big. Therefore, the majority of the kids heats would of been held in the way inside. And that may have been ok for part of the day, the rest of the day would of been a battle dealing with tides and adverse weather conditions so the call was made.
Let the locals have their day!

The following week proved to be cold and damp but clearly there were contestable waves. And that my friends is all you really need to run a contest. The sponsors had quite a bag of goodies to give away for all the contestants and the atmosphere was positive fiesta of sorts.

Now normally I would write a blow by blow description of the heats. However due to a prior committment, I missed the first few heats of the morning. I did see the remaining heats of the day. And what I saw was more of the same from the summer. The Menehunes were rocking the house while the other heats did basically the same. The players were same for the most part and make no mistake about it. These kids have themselves a blast and usallay they make the most of it. So just how big was the surf? Well, depending on who you ask it was at least 3' on the sets and maybe bigger during certain tides.

But like I said it was clearly contestable. And that was just enough for the 5th contest of the new district to GO Off without a hitch. Below are the contest results and although they do not tell tell the whole story they do flect the mood and atomsphere of the day. Which was sky high.

The kids and contestants were treated to all kind of goodies from the sponsors. SURFFREEORDIE, NATIVE EYEWEAR, and WING CHUN HAWAII all stepped up and made this contest a memorable one. In clsoing we want to say that,
It was a great Summer/Fall for our first run at our new District. I think we sent a message across the boards that NNE-ESA is here to stay and you Southern Boys and Girls better hold onto your seats come the next Regionals.
Cause we're coming and we can SURF!

Contest Number 4
Saturday August 24th, 2002
The WALL
North Beach, Hampton, NH
Sponsored by
Pioneers

If you stop to put any stock in the irony of contests, than clearly, there's something to be said about the two contests held in New Hampshire this summer and the two contests held in Maine. Both New Hampshire contests had overcast/rainy skies while both Maine contests had beautiful hot sunny skies. Granted both New Hampshire contests had waves. And when you get right down to it, we're running surf contests not Golf Tournaments. Having said that. The 4th contest of the summer was given the green light by Director Lenny Nichols after having to to snuff the contest the week before due to lack of surf.

The waves? Well, it all depends on who you ask. But suffice to say, it was clearly contestable conditions. In my view, it was 3-4' with onshore winds (light). The heats went off like clockwork. Ya see we do learn from our past. All tides had surf and therefore all heats went out. Depending on where you stood, it was either a high tide bounce into the shorebreak or a midtide reform into the sandbar. As per tradition the little guys went out first. There seems to be more and more Menehunes entering at each contest. This was no different. We had a very healthy contingent of the boys menehunes. Each one of them a potential contender. The quarter finals and semi finals had the better waves and the littlle guys made the best of the conditions. I can't say enough about these little guys. It is such a pleasure to watch them all. They are all so stoked to be out there. It's great. If you ever forget why you started surfing in the first place then take a seat during one of the Menehune heats. It will all come back to you.

The Menehune Finals saw new comer Alex Cavalieri edge out Max Fatello for first place. Another case of Wave count. Alex paced himself while Max gobbled up everything that came his way. Jesse Gould took 3rd and in my opinion the best wave of the heat with a big backside cover-up. Jesse looks strong and all you Menehunes better look over your shoulder.
Kody Grondin took 4th and is starting to connect the dots and it's only a matter of time before he gives these competitors a run for their money. Mitch Reppucci didn't get the waves he needed and took 5th. But anyone who knows Mitch knows that he's capable of taking any heat at any time. Owen Pearson finished up at 6th. It was a tight heat overall.

The Boys heat saw much of the same mini upsets. With Colby Pearson taking first over Cy Zetterberg and Lars Jacobsen. Matt Evans came in at a very strong 4th with Cy's brother Victor settling in at 5th. Mike Zappala finished up at 6th and the Boys Final was history. Cy Zetterberg was long over due for a strong placing and he felt good about taking 2nd. Lars also realizes now that there's some competition out there and he needs to sharpen his skills.

Jr Mens like the prior two divisions had it's share of upsets. Casey Lockwood who looked very strong in the semi finals putting togther a string of big moves had to settle for 2nd place behind Ty Williams. Right behind Casey was his bro Eric nipping at the heels. And behind Eric was Alex McAuliff. There are no guarrantees in contests. As Casey, Lars and Max have found out. You've got to earn it boys. You must earn it.

Speaking of earning it, the Masters once again have proven that you've got to earn the title of Master. Out of the woodwork came the return of Bill Woodward. The stylish Goofy foot from Maine was nailing eveything in sight. His big explosive moves put him smack in first place with Jose Perez the Floridian Transplant doing all he could to hip hop his way into 2nd. Ben Nato and Tom Saulnier had solid showings with their 3rd and 4th place showings. It was an impressive heat as the Masters once again proving that surfing gets better with age and grace.

Speaking of age and grace, the Grand Masters put on a dazzling display of run and bump surfing. Kevin Grondin took first place and never looked back. Grondin has the contest scene wired. But then again so does Bob McNeil. And I guess it would safe to say that contest director Lenny Nichols knows a thing or two about contests. In any event, Grondin won. With Nichols coming in 2nd followed by McNeil.

After the Grand Masters came the Legends where Dick Whitney battled the bragging rights to this man on woman heat. Kitty Pechet just edged by the Whit Man in a close heat.
Another Legend was born on this day.

The latest development of new divisions gave birth at the last contest was the introduction of the Jr Girls Division. Basically they are Menehune girls. Although the surfing may not be the most exciting to watch, it is however, a pure pleasure to watch these young girls surf their hearts out. The girls were out in the high tide shore break and it was, in all fairness, the most difficult conditions of the day. Still, they made the best of it. In the end, it was Gabby Fatello squeaking by Tanya Cummings and Leah Grondin to take first. New comers Carly Gould and Jocelyn Reppucci put in a strong perfomance each.

In the Girls Division Melanie Velstos finally broke her bad luck streak by taking first over the Nichols girls Julia and Nohea. Melanie was deserving of this win as she's been so close in all the other contests. Persistance and practice paid off. At least the Nichol sisters won't have to deal with one winning over the other again.

The Menehune Longboard Finals saw more of the same. Mini upsets were a common thread this day. There are no guarrantees. Cy Zetterberg took first over over 2nd place finisher Colby Pearson and 3rd place Matt Evans. Owen Pearson took 4th, with Mitch Reppucci taking 5th. Brother Victor Zetterberg finished up at 6th ultimately sandwiching all competitors from both ends.

Jr Longboard almost witnessed a serious upset by Kevin Mahoney's fine 2nd place effort. But it was not to be this day, as Dean Petty from Maine walked the nose and dropped knee turned his way into the judges hearts with some fine footwork and long glides. The Petty brothers are a hard team to beat. Alex Orestis and Lars Jacobsen tried but to no avail to dislodge the young Petty boy. Dean was on and that's that.

Men's Longboard saw clearly the end of the Petty brother reign as Dan Ryder and Mike Moran showed why they ride LB's exclusively. Mac Petty could only scatch his head in disbelief as Ryder and Moran's fluid moves and wave savvy put him out of the winners circle. Sam Witherbee tried to shake things up out there but was quite reserved in just being there.

Masters and Grand Masters saw the same two shortboarders taking the same honors in the LB Division. Bill Woodward and Kevin (Where you gonna put these new trophies) Grondin took it to their competition without blinking an eye.

Jr Women's Long Boarding saw young Melanie Velstos once again snag a first place trophy while the others sat back in awe. Julia, Nohea nd Tanya followed in that order.

Menehune Bodyboard saw some of the cutest surfing of the day. If you don't think this heat is a gas to watch you need to get checked out. These little tykes go out in any tide and always seem to get something done. I mean talk about consistent. Big Smiles and Big Fun was had by all.

Jr Bodyboard saw young Kody Grondin pull some manuvers that had his buddies shaking their heads. Full on 360's followed by great wave placement gave Kody the edge for first place. Jared Velstos who in his own right can absoultely kill it on a Bodyboard took 2nd with Nick MiIller and Mitch Reppucci taking 3rd and 4th respectfully. The Pearson Brothers came in 5th and 6th to round things off.

The Short Board Open saw some serious wave riding as these guys battled it out in some serious wave banging moves. It was a who's who heat as Jose Perez got even with Bill Woodward and took a convincing 1st place. Showing pure signs of brilliance was Mike Stanek as he did things on his board that only others are thinking about. He was awarded 2nd place for his efforts. 3rd place finisher was Bill Woodward who just didn't seem to get the waves. Sean McIasc, Casy Lockwood and Ty Williams took 4th, 5th and 6th in that order.

All in all it was a fitting end to the 2002 Summer Contest scene. It was the Districts first summer outing and we seemed to have weathered the storm. Like Lenny said during the award ceremony under the tent in the driving rain.

"We're ONE Team. We're a family!"

And you know what? He's right.

Contest Number 3
Saturday August 3, 2002
York Beach, Maine
Sponsored by
ZAPSTIX
owner Mike Paugh
If you believe in the old adage of "3rd time's a charm" then,
clearly, you'd have to say that the contest last Saturday in Maine was
all time for many different reasons. First and foremost, contestants
and non-contestants alike were treated to the warmest water that any
of us has ever experienced in this neck of the woods. I mean, the water
was over 70 degrees! Someone said it was 74 degrees! Is that possible?
Yes it's possible and it's true. We had warm water and a hot sun beating
down on us throughout the day. All day and what a long day it was.

But whoa, I'm getting ahead of myself here.

Did I mention that there was surf? Granted, it was not big surf
(unlike our first contest back in June) nor was it small surf (like the one
in July at Wells Maine), no, this was surf big enough to hold a contest in
for all to compete. You could not blame mother nature on this day. Again,
if you were a Menehune or a long boarder you were styling.
The surf stayed right around waist high all day. It went from sheer glass,
to a little wind chopped and back to glass again.
But the point is, it stayed throughout the day.

So let's recap this again. Hot sun, warm water, and rideable surf.
Sounds like a good day to run a contest to me. I guess it pays to advertise
because Mike Paugh and company at Zapstix had a record crowd at
the beach. To hear some of the older locals talk it was the
BIGGEST contest at York Beach in over 20 years.

I believe it. There were crowds all day long lining the water's edge,
cheering contestants on, as heat, after heat, after heat, after heat...well,
you get the picture. There were so many contestants that they were still
running heats at 8:30PM. No that's not a typo. 8:30PM! Is that a
full plate combo or what? There were so many heats and
contestants that we had to double up the finals.
It was wild! There could be at any given moment in the afternoon
a Longboard semi going off next to a JrMen's heat. There was
the constant sound of Lifeguards blowing whistles at swimmers
keeping them out of the surfing area. Now there's a switch for ya.
(You Hampton lifeguards reading this?).
It was an amazing joint effort from Zapstix, the Lifeguards,
the non-contestants, the NNE-ESA crews, the judges, the parents,
the kids, the sponsors, even the sharks swimming off the coast.
It was a day for the record books.

The surfing was top shelf all around. From the highly
competitive Menehune heats where Max Fatello and Mitch Repucci
faced off again in another pitched battle for top dog in the mini-me
division. Watching these kids surf is a pleasure for all who come to
these contests. Why? Because they are so stoked to be doing what
they're doing and you are looking into the future. These kids you
see today will undoubedtly be the Jr Mens and Mens you'll see
tomorrow. I can remember like it was yesterday when Kevin Grondin
would come back from an ESA contest on Hatteras and he'd go on
and on about some kid who was blowing minds out in the water,
some little Grom in menehunes who was just tearing it up.
That kid's name was Kelly Slater. Ever hear of him?
Is Max, Mitch, Kody Grondin, and Jared Velstos the future Kelly?
Who knows. Watch the menehunes. It's a blast.

Right behind the menehunes are the Boys heats where Lars and
crew traded hip hopping on those glassy waves in hopes of finding
that one good wave that would hold up long enough to get through to
the finals. And that's what alot of times it boils down to. One wave.
You get 15 minutes, and in that time, maybe two sets would come
through. You have to be lucky enough to see 'em coming to pick
one off. Lars has been lucky the last couple of contests.
But his "peeps" are right behind him.
Look over your shoulder Lars...see 'em? Oh yea.

Then there's JR Mens and the wild antics of Casey Lockwood
and posse. In the JR Mens final Casey found his groove and
commenced to fly along the wave faces and garner speed where
no one else seemed to find. At one point Casey got three waves in a
row that just seemed to fall into his lap. Sometimes the waves
find you, and sometimes you gotta hunt them down.
Casey nailed another victory for Team Empty.

In the Girls Divsion the closely matched heats are always
a coin toss. This day was no different. Those Nichols Sisters Nohea
and Julia will be trading places for some years to come. It's Julia
one week and Nohea the other. It's a family thing. It's funny watching
dad give them both a pep talk before each heat. Cause you know they
both want it bad and living under the same roof must be a never ending
battle in the competitive world of youth sports. Right in the thick of
that mix is young Melanie Velstos. A member of the region's biggest
surf family. Melanie can surf as good as anyone on any given day and
I'm talking boys too. I've seen her free surf and that girl can surf.
But contests being what they are, well sometimes you win and
sometimes you place. This was not Melanie's day. Much to the
dismay of Julia, The day belonged to Nohea.

The Mens and Masters heats were full of slashes and gouges.
Make no mistake about it folks. These are the heats you want to
see if it's anywhere near surfable. These guys can surf. They proved
that back in June during the Father's Day Contest. They grovelled in
the ankle slappers in Wells. But they made the best of it this day.
There was plenty of fin popping going down as Men's contestant
Nico Evans proved once again that it don't matter how big you are and
how small the waves are. You make things happen. And in the true
spirit of contemporary surfing, Nico busted some fins and made some
serious lip bashing and cutties to give the judges a headache.
However, in the end, it was not enough as Mike Manos edged
Nico out to take the hardware home with him.

The Masters Final saw Ben Nato take on Jose Perez in an amazing
display of hip hopping Florida jive surfing that had people spinning
their heads. Jose is a Florida transplant and it shows.
He's been able to consistantly pull off big moves in marginal surf.
I don't know how these Florida surfers can pull that kind
of stuff off but they do.
But ole Ben was not to be outdone by this southern wave hopper
and managed to pull off another victory. The big question is did
Ben's band win the Battle of the Bands competition later that night?

Menehune longboarding saw Mike Hackett glide by 2nd place
Mitch Repucci as Cy Zetterburg came within a point or two to take 3rd.

Both the Jr Mens and Mens longboarding heats were held in the
late afternoon glow and I swear people if you didn't see these heats
you really missed something. The Petty brothers Dean and Mac have
now won back to back contests in their divisions. Dean in the Jr's and
Mac in the Mens. These guys are straight out of the Joel Tudor
school of longboarding. At one point watching Mac knee paddle
out into the line-up was like a throw back to yesteryear. Time stood
still for a brief moment as Mac slid over these glassy humps like a small
glassy day at the Hollister Ranch in California in the mid-60's.
Beautiful to watch. Other noteworthy LB'rs were Sam Witherbee
(who's actually part of the threesome that make up this Team Zapstix
Longboard crew), Nico Evans ( who surprisingly showed lots of class
on a board of length for being such a hot short boarder), and there
was another guy (Who da guy?) in the Longboarding Men's semi final,
who for some reason, took more waves than he was allowed and
ultimately surfed himself out of the finals. That guy was good. Mac
Petty himself agreed. "He was the best longboarder out there."
You are allowed 10 waves and this guy caught a 100.
In the end, the Petty boys (and Sam) went home with more
memories for future family get togethers and a whole lot of class.

Masters longboarding saw Tom Saulnier squeek by Mike Nadeau
and Chris Davies to take home the Gold.

Senior Longboard saw the return of one of New England's best
longboarders, Kevin Grondin. "Doc" coasted by everyone with his
big bag of tricks. When Kevin's on...he can't be beat. He's capable
of doing many things on a Longboard. Spinning, twisting, standing
on his head, fin firsts, etc., etc., etc. You get the picture. He won it.
Lenny Nichols came in 2nd with Moran, McNeil, Whitney
and Gordon coming up behind.

Woman's Longboarding saw the Nichols girls trading places again.
Are you paying attention here? Ok if Nohea won the short board event,
that means Juila won the Longboard event. Got it? And who was
nipping at their heels? Bingo! Melanie.

Bob McNeil slipped by Lenny in the dark during the Grand
Master Flash Longboard heat. With Dennis Gordon taking third.
It was late at night when this all went down.
Those guys were night surfing with night vision.

Dick Whitney edged himself out again in the legends as he took
the sole trophy in an uncontested heat.

Menehune Bodyboard was a classic. These kids crack everyone up.
If you don't think contests aren't fun you have never seen these kids.
They are pricless. Surfing is supposed to be fun. Well, these kids are
having fun. Hoku took first (again) with Josh Schenier a close 2nd.
Noelle Fatello took third, with Yahina Santana in 4th
and Daniel Mackleprang 5th.

A new division was born on this day. Jr Girls. And Kevin Grondin's
little girl Leah took the prize with close friend Gabby Fatello in 2nd.
Tanya (Never Give up) Cummings placed 3rd, with Briana Welch 4th,
and Olivia Mackleprang 5th.

The Open Shortboad heat had a relentless attack by Jose Perez
that stemmed from an earlier disagreement. Like they say. Don't get mad.
Get even. Jose did that and then some. He surfed like a man possessed.
He was in the zone. The Florida zone. And there would be no denying
him this day. Ben Nato did all he could to stop the Floridian Mad man
but it was all to no avail.

By the time the last heat ran it was dark. Yes, I said dark.
The trophies were handed out in complete darkness. Bottom line.
Start-ups from this point on will begin at 7:00AM. There are too
many contestants to start any later than 9:00AM. Keep that in
mind for the next one. 7:00AM sign-ups.

All in all, the 3rd contest was a tremendous success.
Thanks to all who particpated and helped out behind the
scenes and in front of the pack. A BIG thanks to Mike Paugh,
Linda Novak and the whole ZAPSTIX crew for an great job!

Oh yea, we got ourselves a district kids!

Contest Number Two
Saturday July 13, 2002
Wells Jetty, Maine

Sponsored by Liquid Dreams
and Mark Anastis at Liquid Dreams Surf Shop
Well, sometimes the playing field shows up and sometimes
it does not. We're talking of course about the ocean. This is
the only sport that really depends on Mother Nature. It's feast
or famine in surfing. And no one can predict when it's going to be
good and when it's not. Like rolling the dice. You never know.
Unlike the first contest in June, the waves on Saturday July 13th
at Wells Beach Maine were small. Like 1-2' small. Big enough
to hold a contest though. In fact, truth be told, it was big
enough for the menehunes to make it exciting. And during the
longboard heats, the Petty brothers made long boarding
look both graceful and functional.

However, the JrMen, Mens and Masters had a rough go
trying to make things happen in the sloppy small conditions.
But like all good New England Surfers, they made the best
of it. No one complained (at least not out loud) and there
was a fun atmosphere throughout the day. The only real
bummer was those dang
Greenheads. Is there a more
menacing bug on the planet? If there is, I don't want to
meet one. Everyone got through their heats and the
contestants who won earned it the hard way.
They earned it. They made the best of a bad situation.
All in all, Our New District is breaking new ground by having
mulitple contests in our waters. And seriously, how bad
can that be? Because we all know. A Bad Day Surfing
is Still Better Than a Good Day Working.

FIRST CONTEST
June 16th, 2002
Wall & Rye Rocks
Sponsored by
Cinnamon Rainbows
Hampton, NH
Our First Contest went off in serious conditions Father's Day weekend.
How serious? If you were there you know, if you were not...well,
you missed the drama. And make no mistake about it,
there was plenty of drama to be had.

The Surf at the Wall had 8-10' faces and it was the Real Deal.
Overcast with threatening skies, the surf looked meaner than
it actually was. Funny what the sun can do to large surf.
But there would be no sun today. Throw in a super strong rip
and you had the makings of...well, drama.

Lot's of nervous stomachs from both the competitors
and bystanders. There was much concern for everyone involved.
The contest was eventually moved to Rye on The Rocks.
But, not before the Jr Men's Heat faced the Tiger.
The Jr Mens were the only ones to face the Big Surf. They all
deserve a pat on the back. The contest was then re-located to Rye.

The surf at the Rocks was still significant. Throw in the amped locals
(who surfed right through the contest) and you had an interesting mix.

Despite it all, the contest was run smoothly enough to get all the
heats in and out of the water without incident.

So, our First Contest shall be remembered for the Huge Surf
and for being run on Father's Day. Like someone was
overheard saying at the Wall. "Be careful of what you wish for."
Ain't that the truth.
